Call for Papers -- SFPE 8th International Conference on Performance-Based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has issued a Call for Papers for its 8th International Conference on Performance-Based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods. The conference will be held on June 16-18, 2010 at Lund University in Sweden. The conference has established a reputation within the fire protection engineering community as the paramount event for keeping abreast of advancements in performance-based fire protection design. Papers will be presented on newly emerging technologies, as well as perspectives on approaches that have worked well, and approaches that have not worked as well as originally desired. Abstracts are invited for paper presentations on subjects relating to current developments and observations relating to the use or implementation of performance-based codes or fire safety design methods. SFPE Promotes Chemistry of Fire Teachers Kit at Science Teachers Conference

The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) promoted the Chemistry of Fire Teaches Kit at the National Science Teachers Association’s (NSTA) National Conference on Science Education. The conference was held on March 19-22, 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The NSTA Conference included more than 12,000 teachers, science coordinators, curriculum planners, administrators, principals, and students from all over the world. During this event, SFPE distributed over 300 copies of the program to science teachers. Pictured above are science teachers from Houston, Texas at the SFPE exhibit booth. The Chemistry of Fire Teachers Kit is a multimedia standards based curriculum kit that aims to introduce the science of fire into high school chemistry classrooms. Society of Fire Protection Engineers Release Results of Annual Public Opinion Poll

To better understand how humans perceive the dangers from fire, each year the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) performs a public opinion poll. This year’s survey revealed building security topped a list of characteristics as Americans’ most important feature in public buildings. The SFPE survey also revealed that over 58 percent of those surveyed worry about the dangers of fire less than once a year. To find out more about this survey go to:

SFPE Southern California Chapter Completes Pretest of PE Exam

On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 members from the SFPE Southern California Chapter participated in a pre-test of the 2010 Principles and Practice Examination (PE) in Fire Protection Engineering. The pretest was held at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Each year, members from SFPE work with the National Council of Examiner for Engineering and Surveying to pretest the PE exam. This pretest is the last step in the examination development process and serves as a final review of the exam. Pictured from Left to Right are: Andrew Greiner, Brian Mclaughlin, Charles Rutland, MICKEY Mouse, Brian McGraw, Justin Reid, David Bhuta and Russell Hoeltzell. SFPE would like to thank the Southern California Chapter for all of the hard work to ensuring this pretest was a success.
