10 January 2011 is the Application Deadline for the International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering Program

The “International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE)”, is commonly organized by the universities of Ghent (Belgium - coordinator), Edinburgh (UK) and Lund (Sweden). This two-year educational program in the Erasmus Mundus framework provides the required knowledge for a professional fire safety engineer in a Performance Based Design environment.

Besides interuniversity cooperation, student mobility in Europe is a major point of interest. The mobility structure, with possible change in study location after each semester, gives the students the opportunity to gain from the strengths and expertise of each of the three universities.

The first semester, covering basic topics in fire safety engineering, is taught in Ghent or Edinburgh. All students spend the second semester in Lund, with emphasis on enclosure fire dynamics, risk analysis and human behavior. The third semester is again taught in
Ghent (for general FSE) or Edinburgh (with focus on fire and structures engineering in the context of FSE). The fourth semester is devoted to the Master’s thesis.
IMFSE welcomes holders of a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in engineering or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution (minimum 3 years full-time study or 180 ECTS credits). Students in their last year of a Bachelor program can also apply but need to obtain their engineering diploma prior to the start of the IMFSE-program.
The application forms, basic requirements and all other information are found on the website: http://www.imfse.ugent.be/.

Note that the deadline for application is 10 January 2011.

New Free Guide to Careers in Fire Protection Engineering Now Available

To help high school and college students with career choices, Bethesda, MD-based Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) has created the fourth edition of their Guide to Careers in Fire Protection Engineering.

The free guide will especially appeal to students interested in science and who have a desire to make the world a safer place, but any student seeking to discover his or her passion will find the guide informative.

Guide to Careers in Fire Protection Engineering is also a great starting point for students who already want a career in engineering, but are unsure of which specialty is right for them. It provides students the opportunity to explore college degree programs, specific career paths and different ways to enter and succeed in the field.

Fire protection engineering is a fast-growing occupation and stable career choice. According to a recent 2010 SFPE survey, a fire protection engineer with six or less years of experience, on average, earns $75,000 a year and the median annual salary of today’s fire protection engineers exceeds $110,000 plus benefits—among the highest-paid engineers in the nation.

“Recent graduates describe working in a variety of positions from the federal government to private consulting firms,” says Chris Jelenewicz, engineering program manager at SFPE. “They also are high in demand by employers, which is particularly notable in this economy.”

A free copy of The Guide to Careers in Fire Protection Engineering can be obtained by contacting Chris Jelenewicz at chris@sfpe.org.
