Two SFPE Members Selected for Captain in the U.S. Coast Guard

SFPE members David Flaherty and Brian Gilda – both active duty officers in the U.S. Coast Guard – have been selected for the rank of Captain. Captains are among the most senior officers in the Coast Guard – junior only to the senior executive rank of admiral. A Captain in the Coast Guard is equivalent in rank to a Colonel in the Army or Marine Corps.

Flaherty and Gilda are both graduates of the fire protection engineering program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The U.S. Coast Guard is one of the largest employers of fire protection engineers in the federal government. Fire protection engineers serve in both civilian roles and among the officer corps.

Promising young officers in the Coast Guard have the opportunity to compete to attend graduate school. The post-graduate education program is highly competitive because officers selected for this program earn full salary while studying for a post-graduate degree. Fire protection engineering is one of the disciplines in which Coast Guard officers can obtain a graduate degree through the Coast Guard’s post-graduate education program. Both Flaherty and Gilda attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute through this program.

SFPE New England Chapter 3rd Annual A.L. Brown Scholarship Golf Outing

The third annual A.L. Brown Scholarship Golf Outing hosted by the New England Chapter of the SFPE is getting closer! The outing wil take place on Friday, September 9th at Cyprian Keyes Golf Club in Boylston, MA. Multiple registration options are available for both individuals and corporations. Register now to secure your spot!

All proceeds from this event will go to the A.L. Brown Scholarship, which is awarded annually to New England students working on a bachelor or graduate degree in an engineering discipline with an interest in pursuing a career in fire protection engineering. Last year, the golf outing raised $3,600 for the scholarship fund.

12 August 2011 -- Last Day to Submit Papers for the SFPE 9th International Conference on Performance-Based Codes and Fire Safety

The International Conference on Performance-Based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods has established a reputation within the fire protection engineering community as the paramount event for keeping abreast of advancements in performance-based fire protection design.

Performance-based fire protection design continues to grow in use and acceptance. However, fire protection engineering has not reached the state of other engineering disciplines, where performance-based design is the norm. Because it is an advancing field, major new developments occur at a rapid pace.

Starting in 1996, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, along with several partner organizations, has held a biennial conference to showcase the state of the art in performance-based code approaches and engineering design methods. In 2012, this conference will be held in Hong Kong.

Papers will be presented on newly emerging technologies, as well as perspectives on approaches that have worked well, and approaches that have not worked as well as originally desired. Abstracts are invited for paper presentations on subjects relating to current developments and observations relating to the use or implementation of performance-based codes or fire safety design methods.

Share your expertise, showcase your knowledge, and help shape the future
of fire protection engineering by participating in this biennual conference

SPECIFICATIONS FOR SUBMISSIONS

performance-based codes

Abstracts are solicited relating to performance-based regulatory structures, performance-based codes and performance-based standards. Viewpoints are invited on the infrastructure needed for the successful implementation of performance-based codes (education, professional registrations, enforcement, legal environmental, etc.). Perspectives are also sought on experience (both positive and negative) associated with use of performance-based codes.

performance-based design

Abstracts are invited on fire safety engineering methods in use or under development. Viewpoints are also sought on dealing with uncertainty and new research findings relevant to performance-based design. Please note that case studies without generalizable results are typically not acceptable.

audience

The participants in this conference will be professionals involved in engineering of all disciplines—regulation development and enforcement, testing, standards of development, and development of engineering design methods.

submittal requirements

Those wishing to present papers should submit a one- to two-page abstract to the
conference secretariat by 12 August 2011. The conference language is English.

The extended abstracts should identify the topic being addressed, the approach used or suggested for addressing the topic, and results or recommendations. All topics
relevant to performance-based codes or fire safety design methods will be considered.

Please include the name, address, phone number, and email address of the
corresponding author with all submitted abstracts. If accepted, completed papers will be due by 17 February 2012.

Submit abstracts to conference@sfpe.org and include “Hong Kong 2012” in the subject line of the email.
