The award is made by the SFPE Board of Directors in acknowledgment of contributions to the advancement of professional recognition of the fire protection engineer. It is named in honor of D. Peter Lund, the first executive director of SFPE.
“Throughout his career Sekizawa has served as a positive advocate for the fire protection engineering profession throughout Japan,” said SFPE Engineering Program Manager Chris Jelenewicz. “Most recently he promoted the science and technology that keeps our world safe from fire by serving as President of Japan Association for Fire Science and Engineering from 2009 to 2010.”
For 30 years Sekizawa has focused his research on fire risk analysis especially in residential fires and fire safety plans for buildings. He was awarded a Doctoral Degree of Engineering from Kyoto University in 1979. In 1992, he was the recipient of “The Harry C. Bigglestone Award” of the Journal of Fire Technology for the joint paper with Dr. John Hall entitled "Fire Risk Analysis: General Conceptual Framework for Describing Models." This paper greatly contributed to enhance common understanding and sharing of the concept and terminology regarding fire risk analysis among fire researchers and fire protection engineers.
